Does UC Santa Cruz offer a solid graphic design program?

Hey everyone! I'm a junior in high school, and I'm really into graphic design. I've been considering UC Santa Cruz for college, but I'm not sure about their graphic design program. Can any current students or anyone familiar with the program give me some insight into the quality of their courses and resources? Thanks so much!

Hello! While UC Santa Cruz doesn't have a dedicated graphic design major, they do offer an Art & Design: Games & Playable Media Bachelor of Art (B.A.) degree. This program, part of the Arts Division, incorporates elements of graphic design, game design, and interactive media. This can be a good fit for those interested in combining their graphic design passion with game development.

The faculty in this program are experienced industry professionals, and various classes allow you to explore different aspects of game design, including concept art, 3D modeling, animation, user experience design, and more. Furthermore, the resources and facilities available at UCSC, such as the Digital Arts Research Center and the Center for Games and Playable Media, ensure you have access to cutting-edge labs and equipment to develop your skills further.

If you are solely looking for a pure graphic design major, UC Santa Cruz might not be the perfect fit unless you want to expand your skillset towards game design. However, if you're open to exploring a blend of game design and graphic design, this Art & Design: Games & Playable Media B.A. program might be worth considering. It's essential to research specific courses available and connect with current students or alumni to get a deeper understanding of the program's offerings and how they align with your goals.

Good luck in your college search!
