Experience with UNLV's statistics department?

I've been thinking of majoring in statistics, and I'm interested in UNLV as an option. Anyone here have experience with the stats department there? How are the professors, course offerings, and overall atmosphere in the department?

Hi! It's worth noting that UNLV actually doesn't have a separate statistics department - rather, you would study in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, and earn a B.S. or B.A. in that field, while having the opportunity to take courses in statistics. Although your degree wouldn't be in statistics specifically, you would still have ample opportunity to explore the field.

From what I've heard, UNLV is known to have quite a few dedicated Mathematical Sciences professors who are passionate about statistics in particular. They tend to be approachable and supportive, and willing to work with students to ensure they grasp complex concepts. That being said, individual experiences can vary, so it's essential to keep that in mind. At any college, it's a good idea to ask upperclassmen for their thoughts on particular professors, to ensure you take classes with ones whose teaching style aligns with your learning style.

In terms of course offerings, UNLV will allow you to study a comprehensive range of topics in statistics. You'll find classes in probability theory, statistical inference, linear regression, and time series analysis. Additionally, they offer elective courses in more specific areas such as biostatistics and applied multivariate analysis. It's recommended that you review the course catalog to get a detailed understanding of the program structure and class availability.

The overall atmosphere of the Department of Mathematical Sciences is considered to be collaborative, with students often working on group projects and engaging in study groups. It's essential to actively participate in these collaborative settings, as they provide valuable learning experiences and help build connections with your peers.

To get more accurate and personal insights from current students or alumni, you may want to reach out to them through UNLV's Mathematical Sciences department, or join student forums and social media groups. These connections can give you a much better understanding of the day-to-day life of a student interested in statistics at UNLV, and potentially even inform you about statistics-specific opportunities that can't be easily found online.

Finally, if you're looking for ways to pursue your passion for statistics while still in high school, check out this blog post from CollegeVine, which lists a range of math-related summer programs for high schoolers: https://blog.collegevine.com/high-school-math-summer-programs/. Many of them will allow you to focus on statistics specifically, and participating in one could even give you a boost during the college process, as admissions officers love to see that you're taking initiative and exploring your interests outside of the classroom!

I hope this information helps you make an informed decision about whether UNLV's statistics department is the right fit for you! Good luck with your college search!
