How much do college essays really matter?

Hello everyone, I've been stressing over my college essays recently, and I'm curious how much they actually matter in the admissions process. Are they just one aspect of the application that doesn't hold much weight, or do they really play a significant role in determining if I get accepted? Any info or advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi there! It's completely normal to feel stressed about your college essays, as they're definitely an important part of the application process. Though it's true that they're just one aspect of your application, their significance shouldn't be underestimated.

Your essay allows the admissions officers to see a side of you that goes beyond grades, test scores, and extracurricular activities. It's a chance for them to learn about your personality, values, and motivations. This personal insight can often be the deciding factor between two applicants who might be similarly qualified on paper.

To give you an example, my child's essay focused on overcoming biases and negative assumptions people made about them based on their background. Their story not only showcased their resilience, but also their dedication to promoting understanding between different communities. The essay ended up being a key factor in admissions officers' decision to offer them a spot at a competitive university.

So, while there are certainly other aspects of your application to consider, do give your essay the time and effort it deserves. It could really make all the difference! Good luck!
