How Long is the ACT?

Hi everyone, I have a question about the ACT. How long does the test last, including time for breaks, and what should I expect on test day?

Hello! The ACT test consists of four required sections: English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science, as well as an optional Writing section. Here's a breakdown of the timing for the various sections of the ACT:

1. English: 45 minutes (75 questions)

2. Mathematics: 60 minutes (60 questions)

3. Reading: 35 minutes (40 questions)

4. Science: 35 minutes (40 questions)

5. Writing (Optional): 40 minutes (1 essay prompt)

In addition to the time allotted for each section, there is a 10-minute break between the Math and Reading sections, as well as a 5-minute break before the optional Writing section.

If you do not take the optional Writing section, the total test time (including the 10-minute break) comes to about 3 hours and 5 minutes. If you choose to take the Writing section, the test will last around 3 hours and 50 minutes, including both breaks.

On test day, you should expect the following:

1. Arrive early: Aim to arrive at least 30 minutes before the test center's scheduled opening time. You want to have plenty of time to find your testing room, check-in, and get settled.

2. Bring your admission ticket and proper ID: Don't forget your printed admission ticket and a valid, government-issued photo ID. These are required for check-in.

3. Bring necessary supplies: You should bring #2 pencils (non-mechanical) and an ACT-approved calculator. Optionally, you can bring a small, quiet snack and a water bottle to consume during breaks.

4. Dress comfortably: You may be sitting for an extended period, so wear comfortable clothes and dress in layers to be prepared for varying room temperatures.

5. Follow the test center rules: Pay attention to any instructions the test center staff give you and be respectful to other test-takers. Observe any posted rules related to quietness or permitted items in the testing room.

Remember to get a good night's sleep the night before and eat a balanced breakfast on test day.
