Dental hygienist programs at OCC?

I'm interested in becoming a dental hygienist, and I've been considering applying to OCC (Orange Coast College) since it's close to where I live. Does anyone know how OCC's dental hygienist program is? Is it competitive, and what are the prerequisites for the program? Thank you!

Orange Coast College (OCC) has a solid dental hygiene program, accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. It offers an Associate in Science degree in Dental Hygiene, which prepares students for licensure and entry into professional dental hygiene practice.

The program can be competitive, as they admit around 24 students annually through a selective admissions process. It's important to have a strong academic background and meet the prerequisite coursework requirements to maximize your chances of getting into the program.

Here's a summary of the prerequisites for OCC's dental hygiene program:

1. English: A college-level English course (minimum grade C)

2. Chemistry: A general, inorganic, or introductory Chemistry course with laboratory component (minimum grade C)

3. Anatomy: A Human Anatomy course with laboratory component (minimum grade C)

4. Physiology: A Human Physiology course with laboratory component (minimum grade C)

5. Microbiology: A general Microbiology course with laboratory component (minimum grade C)

6. Math: Intermediate Algebra or any course that meets the General Education Math Competency Requirement (minimum grade C)

7. Communication: A public speaking, interpersonal communication, or group dynamics course (minimum grade C)

8. Social and Behavioral Science: A cultural anthropology, or sociology or general psychology course (minimum grade C)

9. Nutrition: A human nutrition course (minimum grade C)

You can find the full list of prerequisites and details on OCC's dental hygiene program website or by reaching out to their admissions office. It's essential to verify the prerequisites with the college's current requirements, as they may change.

Additionally, when applying, you should submit your official transcripts from all colleges attended and, if necessary, your foreign evaluations for the courses taken outside the United States. Some students also find it helpful to reach out to current or former OCC dental hygiene students to get a better understanding of the program and the application process.

Keep in mind that the program is demanding and requires full-time commitment during the weekdays, usually running for 22 months. Once completed, you'll be eligible to take the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination and the California State or other regional licensing examinations.

Best of luck in pursuing your dental hygienist dream!
