How's the Mathematics department at Boise State?

Hi everyone! I'm strongly considering Boise State to study mathematics. Could anyone give me an idea of the quality of the Math department there? I'm curious about class sizes, faculty, and how challenging the coursework is.

Hi there! Boise State has a solid Mathematics department that offers a range of undergraduate programs, including a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with options to specialize in Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or Secondary Education. The department also offers a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics, which emphasizes a more flexible curriculum to accommodate interdisciplinary interests.

The class sizes for lower-division math courses tend to be larger, but as you move towards upper-division courses, the class sizes typically become smaller, providing students with more opportunities to interact directly with professors. The faculty in the department are highly knowledgeable and experienced, with many of them holding PhDs in their respective fields and actively conducting research. Students often report that professors at Boise State are approachable and helpful, fostering a positive learning environment.

As for the coursework, the difficulty level is subjective and largely depends on your background and interest in mathematics. However, the curriculum does provide a thorough and challenging experience. You'll start with foundational courses such as Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Discrete Mathematics before moving on to more specialized topics like Abstract Algebra, Real Analysis, and Topology.

Overall, Boise State's Mathematics department has a good balance of engaging coursework, experienced faculty, and varied academic opportunities. You can also get involved in faculty-mentored research projects and join math-related clubs to further enhance your college experience.
