How important are awards and honors in college applications?

Hi, I'm a high school junior and I haven't won many awards or honors yet. How important are they in college applications? What do admissions officers look for? I'm a little stressed, any advice would be appreciated!

Hey there! I understand why you might be feeling a bit stressed about this. Remember that awards and honors can definitely play a role in college applications, but they're not the sole determining factor. Colleges and universities consider a multitude of factors like grades, test scores, essays, extracurricular activities, and more when evaluating applicants.

Awards and honors can showcase your dedication and hard work in a specific area. However, what's more important is how you tell your story and present yourself to the admissions officers. Universities value students that show quality in the activities and passions they pursue, regardless of the number of awards they have won.

It's important to focus on cultivating and demonstrating skills in activities you really care about. If you're excelling at your passions and making a difference in your community, that will shine through in your application. For example, my child was really passionate about environmental issues and took part in various local projects, though they didn't win many awards. They described their experiences in their essays, and it resonated with the admissions officers.

The main takeaway is to focus on finding and pursuing your passions, rather than stressing too much about awards and honors. Build a strong overall application by maintaining good grades, engaging in extracurriculars, volunteering, and writing strong essays. Admissions officers seek unique, passionate, and talented students who will make a lasting impact on their campuses. Good luck with everything!
