Military Academies Info

Hey, I'm considering a career in the military and I've heard about military academies. Which military academies are there and what do I need to do to get accepted to one?

Hello! There are five federally-run military academies in the United States:

1. United States Military Academy (West Point) - Army

2. United States Naval Academy (Annapolis) - Navy and Marine Corps

3. United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) - Air Force and Space Force

4. United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) - Coast Guard

5. United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) - Merchant Marines

While each academy has its requirements, there are some common steps to get accepted:

1. Academics: Strong high school GPA, rigorous coursework, and competitive SAT or ACT scores are crucial. Most successful candidates are at or near the top of their class.

2. Extracurricular Activities: Each academy values applicants who can demonstrate leadership, commitment, and a well-rounded character. You can showcase these qualities through varsity sports, clubs, and/or volunteer work.

3. Fitness: You will need to pass the Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA), which tests your physical aptitude in various exercises like pushups, sit-ups, running, and more.

4. Medical Examination: You'll have to undergo a medical exam conducted by the Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board (DoDMERB).

5. Letters of Recommendation: Obtain letters of recommendation from teachers, coaches, or other individuals who can speak to your character, leadership, and academic abilities.

6. Nomination: For West Point, Annapolis, and USAFA, you must also secure a congressional nomination. Typically, you can obtain this nomination from a U.S. senator, representative, or the Vice President. USMMA has a similar nomination process, with the added option of receiving nominations from the U.S. Secretary of Transportation.

Please note that USCGA does not require a nomination. They have their own application process, and admissions are based solely on candidate qualifications.

In addition to these common steps, research each academy's specific requirements and deadlines, as they ultimately are all distinct institutions. Best of luck on your journey towards a military career!
