What's the Lowest Possible SAT Score and What Does it Mean?

Out of curiosity, what is the lowest possible score that someone could get on the SAT, and how does that compare to the average scores? I just want to have a better idea of the score range and how it's evaluated. Thanks!

The lowest possible score on the SAT is 400, with 200 points being the minimum for each of the two sections: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) and Math. Each section is scored on a scale of 200-800, adding up to a total maximum score of 1600. It's important to note that this minimum score is quite rare, as it would require a test-taker to answer nearly every question incorrectly or leave a majority of questions unanswered.

In contrast, the average SAT scores are much higher. For the Class of 2022, the average EBRW score was 529 and the average Math score was 521, resulting in an overall average score of around 1050. These average scores can help give you an idea of where most test-takers fall in the score range. However, it's also crucial to understand that colleges and universities have varying expectations when it comes to SAT scores.

As a general rule, more selective institutions typically have higher score expectations, and an applicant's score should meet or exceed a school's median score range for the best chances of admission. You can usually find these ranges on a school's admissions website or through a quick online search. Keep in mind that test scores aren't the sole determining factor in the college application process; other factors such as GPA, extracurricular activities, and essays also contribute significantly to your overall application profile.
