Music therapy degree options in Texas?

I'm a junior in high school and want to study music therapy in college. Are there any good music therapy degree programs in Texas? Which schools should I be looking at? Any advice or input would be helpful!

It's wonderful that you're interested in pursuing a music therapy degree! Texas has a few institutions that offer Bachelor's degrees in music therapy, enabling you to become a registered music therapist. Here are some programs you should consider:

1. University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) - Located in San Antonio, UIW offers a Bachelor of Music Therapy degree. Their program encompasses both musical training and a course of study in therapeutic techniques, plus a six-month internship to gain real-world experience.

2. Sam Houston State University (SHSU) - SHSU has a Bachelor of Music with an emphasis in Music Therapy program in Huntsville, Texas. This program has a strong foundation in music, psychology, and music therapy courses. Alongside the coursework, you'll complete practical therapeutic experiences and a clinical internship.

3. Texas Woman's University (TWU) - At TWU, you can pursue a Bachelor of Science in Music Therapy. Located in Denton, this program combines musical training, psychology courses, and clinical experiences to prepare you for a successful career in music therapy. While the school is co-ed, keep in mind that it is historically a women's university.

4. West Texas A&M University - WTAMU, in Canyon, offers a Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy. Their program provides robust music therapy training, including coursework and opportunities for hands-on experience through partnering organizations.

Keep in mind that for a successful music therapy career, you'll need to complete your degree and internship requirements, then pass the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) exam to become a board-certified music therapist.

As you explore your options, consider factors such as location, campus size, tuition, and available resources or support. Attend college fairs or visit the schools to learn more and determine which program aligns best with your goals. Good luck on your journey toward becoming a music therapist!
