UCF History Degree Experience?

I'm looking to major in history at UCF and I'd love to hear from some fellow history buffs! What's the quality of the program like? Are there research opportunities or internships available for history majors at UCF?

As a current college student, I've heard mostly positive things about the UCF history program. It's reportedly well-regarded, with a diverse range of courses and knowledgeable professors. Classes cover topics such as U.S., European, and world history, with some specific courses focusing on areas like African American history, women's history, military history, and the history of science and technology. You'll have the opportunity to engage in-depth discussions and develop strong analytical and writing skills, which are valuable for a history major.

Research opportunities do exist for UCF history students. Several faculty members in the program actively conduct research and may offer undergraduate students opportunities to assist on various projects. It's typically best to approach professors whose research interests align with yours to inquire about potential openings in their research teams. Additionally, UCF offers an Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) that can help you connect with faculty-led projects or develop your own research proposal with the guidance of a faculty mentor.

Internships can be a significant aspect of your UCF experience, too. The College of Arts and Humanities, which houses the history program, has a department dedicated to career development and internships, called CAHSA (College of Arts and Humanities Student Advising). You can consult with CAHSA to find internships related to history or your career goals in the Central Florida area. Some popular internship destinations for history majors include local museums, cultural and historical organizations, educational institutions, and even government agencies.

To make the most out of your UCF history experience, consider joining the UCF History Club, which regularly hosts guest lectures, film screenings, and various social and networking events. By connecting with fellow history enthusiasts in and outside the classroom, you'll expand your historical knowledge and gain a well-rounded view of the field. Good luck!
