Differences between AP Pre-Calculus and regular Pre-Calculus?

My school offers AP Pre-Calculus as an option in addition to regular Pre-Calculus. I am curious whether the difference between the two courses is significant in terms of workload and material. Which one do you recommend for someone who's aiming for a STEM major in college?

AP Pre-Calculus and regular Pre-Calculus are similar in that they both prepare students for college-level Calculus courses; however, there are some key differences between the two in terms of content, pace, and expectations.

Content: AP Pre-Calculus will cover all the topics that regular Pre-Calculus does, with the addition of more advanced material. This means that you'll delve deeper into certain areas in AP Pre-Calculus, such as trigonometry, functions, limits, and more. The advanced content not only prepares you for Calculus, but also gives you a head start on college-level math courses.

Pace: AP Pre-Calculus is generally a faster-paced course compared to regular Pre-Calculus. It covers a wider range of topics, so you'll need to keep up with the extra material while also mastering the fundamentals. This can be more challenging, but it will expose you to a higher level of mathematical reasoning and push you to develop better study habits.

Expectations: Since AP courses are designed to be college-level classes, the expectations in AP Pre-Calculus are usually higher than those in regular Pre-Calculus. This may include more rigorous homework assignments, tests, and projects. Additionally, if your school's AP course has an associated exam, you might prepare for and take the exam at the end of the year. Scoring well on the exam could potentially earn you college credit, depending on the institution you attend.

As a STEM major, taking AP Pre-Calculus could be advantageous as it will better prepare you for higher-level math courses you'll encounter in college. However, it's important to assess your current math foundation and study habits to determine if you're ready for the increased rigor. If you feel confident in your math abilities and are willing to put in the extra effort, I would recommend AP Pre-Calculus to better prepare yourself for a STEM major in college and possibly earn some college credit through the AP exam.
