How many AP classes do Ivy League schools expect students to have taken?

Hey everyone, I was wondering how many AP classes I should be taking to be considered a competitive applicant for Ivy League schools. Do they look for a specific number or is it more about challenging yourself with a rigorous course load? Any advice would be great!

Hey there! While there isn't a specific number of AP classes required for Ivy League schools, they do expect students to have taken a challenging course load relative to what's available at their school. Ultimately, it's about demonstrating your ability to excel in rigorous courses.

Keep in mind that these schools look at the whole picture, and your academic performance is just one piece of the puzzle. They'll also take into consideration your extracurricular activities, leadership roles, community service, and more. Still, it's important to challenge yourself academically, as that shows your dedication to learning.

For example, if your school offers 10 AP classes and you've taken 3 or 4, then you may not be seen as pushing yourself as much as a student who took 6 or 7. It's all about context. If you feel comfortable handling AP courses, try to take a few more in areas that interest you to demonstrate your academic strength.

That being said, don't overburden yourself with too many AP classes if it's going to negatively affect your grades or ability to participate in other aspects of your life. Balance is key. Good luck!
