Would learning a new language be considered an extracurricular?

Hi everyone! I'm really passionate about learning languages and have taught myself a new language (with some help from language apps and books) outside of school courses. Is this something I should list as an extracurricular activity on my college applications, or would it not count? Thanks!

Hello! It's great to hear that you're passionate about learning languages. In answer to your question, yes, learning a language on your own definitely could be considered an extracurricular activity. You should list it on your college applications.

When describing this activity, make sure to highlight the effort you've put into it and the skills you've developed through your language learning journey. You could mention the resources you've used, such as language apps and books, as well as any progress you've made, like becoming conversational or passing language examinations.

Your dedication to learning languages shows motivation and intellectual curiosity, which are traits colleges look for in applicants. To learn more about how to showcase your extracurricular activities, read this CollegeVine blog post: How to Write About Activities

Good luck, and I hope you continue exploring different languages in the future!
