ACT Test Rules - What to Expect?

Hi everyone! I'm a little nervous about my upcoming ACT test and I want to make sure I'm aware of all the rules. Can someone give me an overview of the most important test-day rules, like what's allowed, prohibited, etc.?

Hi there! It's completely normal to feel a bit nervous about the ACT, but knowing the rules beforehand can help you feel prepared and more at ease. Here's an overview of the most important test-day rules and guidelines.

Before test day:

1. Register and print your admission ticket with a visible photo of you.

2. Bring a valid photo ID (driver's license, passport, or school ID) that matches the name on your admission ticket.

On test day:

1. Arrive at least 30 minutes before the test starts to avoid any last-minute issues.

2. Dress comfortably and in layers, since room temperature can vary.

Allowed items:

1. #2 pencils (not mechanical) with erasers.

2. An approved calculator for the math section (check the list of approved calculators on the ACT website).

3. A watch without an alarm to help with time management (no smartwatches).

Prohibited items:

1. Electronic devices, including cell phones, smartwatches, headphones, and MP3 players.

2. Books, papers, or dictionaries, unless English is not your first language (in which case, you may bring a bilingual, word-for-word dictionary).

3. Food or drink in the testing area (though you may consume them during breaks).

4. Highlighters, rulers, or other writing utensils.

Test rules:

1. Listen carefully and follow instructions from the test proctor.

2. Do not share or discuss test content during or after the exam (this includes posting online).

3. Complete all work by hand; no typing or recording.

4. Do not leave the testing area without permission from the proctor.

Breaks:

1. There's a 15-minute break between the second and third tests.

2. You may leave the testing area during break time, but be sure to return on time.

3. There's a shorter break for those taking the ACT with Writing, between the multiple-choice and writing sections.

Knowing these rules should help you feel prepared for test day. Good luck on your ACT!
