Would reading as a hobby count as an extracurricular activity?

Hi there! I'm an avid reader and wanted to know if my passion for reading falls under the category of extracurricular activities when applying to colleges. Should I include this information in my application?

Hello! It's great to hear that you're passionate about reading. While reading as a hobby might not be a traditional extracurricular activity, it can still be an important aspect of your college application. As a valuable personal interest, it demonstrates an intellectual curiosity that many colleges appreciate.

It's important, however, to communicate how you engage with books, whether through book clubs, literary discussion groups, or writing book reviews. If you're able to go beyond merely enjoying reading and show how you've contributed to the literary community or how it's helped you grow as a person, that will make your passion for books more substantial on your application.

For example, my child also loves reading and wanted to showcase that interest while applying to college. They decided to volunteer at the local library and connected with fellow book lovers, ultimately starting a monthly book club. In their college application, they emphasized their involvement with the library and how they brought people together through their love of books.

I recommend including your passion for reading in your application, but try to find ways to demonstrate to colleges how your interest has impacted your personal growth and connected you to others. Best of luck!
