Is it better to take harder classes or maintain a higher GPA?

Hi there! I'm a junior trying to plan my senior year schedule. I'm torn between taking more challenging courses (like APs) and potentially lowering my GPA, or taking easier classes to maintain a high GPA. What do colleges prefer to see on transcripts? Thanks for your input!

Hi! I understand your dilemma, as my child was in a similar situation not too long ago. The short answer is that colleges like to see a balance of both challenging courses and a high GPA. They want to see that you're pushing yourself academically but also maintaining strong grades. Keep in mind that colleges look at your course rigor and GPA within the context of your school's offerings. If you have the opportunity to take AP classes and you think you can do well in them, then, by all means, go for it. However, if you think taking too many challenging classes might significantly hurt your GPA, then you might want to find a balance between the two. It's important to challenge yourself, but not at the expense of your overall academic performance. Additionally, colleges also consider other factors like extracurriculars, essays, and recommendations, so make sure you're focusing on those aspects as well. Ultimately, it's about finding the right balance for you and showing colleges that you're a well-rounded student. Best of luck with your decision!
