Is learning a language an extracurricular activity?

Hi there! Over the past few years, I've been teaching myself Korean and have become quite proficient. Can I include this as an extracurricular activity on my college applications, or should I stick to more traditional activities? Thanks!

Hello! It's great to hear that you've been teaching yourself Korean and have become proficient in it. To answer your question, yes, learning a language can absolutely be considered an extracurricular activity for your college applications.

Extracurricular activities do not have to be limited to traditional activities like sports, clubs, or volunteer work. Independent pursuits, like learning a language on your own, can showcase dedication, self-motivation, and a genuine interest in the subject.

When listing this activity on your application, be sure to include details such as the number of years you've been studying Korean, any methods or resources you've used to learn (apps, books, online classes, etc.), and any achievements related to your proficiency in Korean, like passing a language certification test or participating in language-related events or competitions.

Colleges appreciate students who pursue a diverse range of interests and can showcase their commitment and growth in those areas. So, don't hesitate to include your language learning journey as an extracurricular activity. It may even set you apart from other applicants!

Best of luck with your college applications!
