ACT Time Limits per Section

I'm getting ready to take the ACT soon. Can someone please break down the time limits for each section of the test? Want to make sure I'm pacing myself correctly when practicing.

Of course! Proper pacing is crucial for success on the ACT. The test consists of four main sections, plus an optional writing section. Here are the time limits and number of questions for each section:

1. English: 45 minutes for 75 questions

In this section, you'll be covering grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and rhetorical skills. This works out to about 36 seconds per question, so practicing time management is essential. Read passages carefully but efficiently and try to spend no more than a minute on any single passage.

2. Math: 60 minutes for 60 questions

The Math section covers topics such as algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. You'll have a full minute for each question. Pace yourself and work on the easier questions first. If you get stuck on a particular question, skip it and come back to it if you have time.

3. Reading: 35 minutes for 40 questions

The Reading section consists of four passages in various genres (literature, social science, natural science, and humanities), each followed by ten questions. You'll have approximately 52 seconds per question or around 8 minutes per passage. Read the passages quickly but thoroughly, focusing on main ideas, supporting details, and the author's tone.

4. Science: 35 minutes for 40 questions

The Science section tests your skills in interpreting scientific data, charts, and graphs, in context with experimental setups. You will not need specific science knowledge to answer these questions. Like the Reading section, you will have approximately 52 seconds per question. Skim through the information to locate the data relevant to each question and avoid getting caught up in the technical details.

(Optional) 5. Writing: 40 minutes for 1 essay prompt

If you choose to take the optional Writing section, you'll have 40 minutes to write an essay in response to a given prompt. Spend around 10 minutes planning and outlining your essay, 25 minutes writing, and the last 5 minutes editing and revising.

I hope this breakdown helps you practice for the ACT effectively! Good luck with your test prep, and remember to focus on understanding each question's requirements and managing your time while practicing.
