Getting into Harvard University: what does it take?

Harvard is one of the top choices on my college list, and I was wondering if anyone could share their experiences or tips on what helped them get into Harvard or similar Ivy League schools. I'd really appreciate any advice you can offer!

Getting into Harvard or any other Ivy League school requires a mix of strong academics, extracurricular achievements, and solid application materials. Here are some tips to increase your chances:

1. Excelling academically: Aim for a high GPA and take challenging courses such as honors, AP, or IB classes, which will demonstrate your ability to handle rigorous academic loads. A strong SAT or ACT score is also important, especially for schools that are not test-optional. Keep in mind, Harvard and other ivies have a high average GPA and standardized test scores for accepted students, so staying competitive is crucial.

2. Developing a "spike": Ivy League schools are interested in applicants who possess a highly-developed specialty in a particular area. This means you should focus on one or two extracurriculars where you can achieve significant milestones, accomplishments, or leadership roles (Tiers 1 and 2). Examples include being a nationally-ranked athlete, excelling in science competitions, or winning creative writing contests.
