Can you use a calculator on the ACT test?

I'm taking the ACT soon and I'm wondering if I'm allowed to use a calculator during the test? If so, are there any restrictions on the type of calculator I can bring? I want to be prepared and follow the rules so I don't get in trouble on test day.

Yes, you are allowed to use a calculator on the ACT, but only for the Math section. The ACT has specific calculator policies you should be aware of to ensure you're following the rules on test day.

First and foremost, not all calculators are allowed. Permitted calculators include: most basic, scientific, and graphing calculators. Some popular calculator models that are allowed are the TI-84, TI-83, and Casio fx-series.

Here are some general guidelines to help you determine if your calculator is allowed:

1. Calculators with built-in computer algebra systems (CAS) are generally not allowed, like the TI-89 and TI-Nspire CAS.

2. Laptops or devices with a QWERTY keyboard are not allowed.

3. Calculators with paper tape or that make noise are not allowed.

4. Calculators that require an electrical outlet are not allowed.

5. Calculators that can communicate wirelessly or have internet capability are not allowed.

To avoid any issues on test day, it's best to double-check the ACT's calculator policy and make sure your specific calculator model is allowed. Additionally, bring extra batteries or have a backup calculator just in case your primary calculator stops working during the test.

Good luck on the ACT!
