UPenn admission difficulty level?

Hi guys, I've been looking into the University of Pennsylvania and I'm quite impressed. I was wondering, how hard is it to get into Penn? What kind of GPA, test scores, and extracurriculars do they generally look for in applicants? Grateful for any advice!

UPenn is an Ivy League school and is quite selective, admitting only around 7% of applicants in recent years. To be a competitive applicant, you will need to demonstrate strong academic achievement as well as involvement in meaningful extracurricular activities.

GPA: UPenn doesn't set a minimum GPA, but successful applicants typically have a GPA close to 4.0 unweighted, or higher if weighted. Most admitted students are in the top 10% of their high school class, though the specifics can vary depending on the academic rigor and opportunities offered by your school.

Test Scores: While UPenn is currently test-optional for the 2024-2025 application cycle, submitting competitive test scores can still be helpful if they strengthen your application. For admitted students who submitted SAT scores in the past, the middle 50% range was around 1460-1560. For the ACT, the middle 50% range was 33-35. However, remember that standardized test scores are just one part of your application.

Extracurriculars: UPenn values well-rounded applicants with a major strength or "spike" in a particular area, whether that's academics, leadership, community service, or the arts. They are looking for students who have demonstrated passion, commitment, and excellence in their chosen activities. Successful applicants usually have 8-10 extracurricular activities, with high involvement in a few. The 4 Tiers of Extracurriculars can help you gauge the impact of your activities—aim for a mix of Tier 1 to Tier 3 activities, with a focus on showing depth or a spike in one area.

Keep in mind that UPenn uses a holistic approach when reviewing applications, so they will also consider factors such as your essays, recommendations, and personal background. While GPA, test scores, and extracurriculars are important, it's crucial to also develop a compelling and authentic personal narrative in your application to truly stand out.

Good luck!
