What's a Good PSAT Qualifying Score?

Hi everyone, I've taken the PSAT and now I'm trying to figure out if my scores are any good. What's considered a qualifying score? How do my scores compare to other students?

A good PSAT score is one that qualifies you for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Qualifying scores are determined by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) and vary from state to state because they are based on the top 1% of students in each state. The qualifying score is often referred to as the "Selection Index," which is calculated by summing your scores in the three sections (Reading, Writing and Language, and Math) and then multiplying by 2. For example, if you scored 33 in Reading, 31 in Writing and Language, and 33 in Math, your Selection Index would be (33+31+33) 2 = 194.

Since the PSAT is taken primarily by high school juniors, score ranges vary each year, as well as by state. Historically, Selection Index cutoffs have ranged from the low 200s in less competitive states to the high 220s in more competitive states. To understand how your scores compare to other students, you can look up the previous year's Selection Index cutoffs in your state, keeping in mind that these might vary slightly for your year. The College Board also provides percentiles along with your scores, so you can see how your performance ranks nationally.

It's important to remember that the PSAT is just one part of your college application process, and while it can lead to scholarship opportunities through the National Merit Scholarship Program, it doesn't have a direct impact on your college admissions. Keep focusing on maintaining strong grades, participating in extracurricular activities, and developing good study habits, which will help you succeed on the SAT or ACT when it comes time to apply to colleges.
