What does the PSAT test cover?

I'm taking the PSAT in 2023, and I want to know what subject areas the test covers so I can prepare effectively. Can anyone help me out with that?

The PSAT, also known as the Preliminary SAT or PSAT/NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test), is designed to give you an idea of your future SAT performance and is also used for determining eligibility for National Merit Scholarships. The PSAT is divided into two sections: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (ERW) and Math. Here's a closer look at what each section tests:

1. Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (ERW): This section consists of two parts – the Reading Test and the Writing and Language Test.

a) Reading Test: This part assesses your ability to understand and analyze passages from different genres, including literature, history/social studies, and science. You'll be asked to answer questions about the passages' main points, vocabulary in context, and evidence-based reasoning. The test focuses on reading comprehension and critical thinking skills.

b) Writing and Language Test: In this part, you'll encounter passages that contain errors or can be improved in areas such as grammar, punctuation, syntax, and word choice. Your task is to identify and correct these errors or make improvements to enhance the clarity or effectiveness of the passage. This test evaluates your understanding of standard written English conventions and your ability to revise and edit text.

2. Math: The Math section covers a range of mathematical concepts, primarily from three domains: Heart of Algebra, Problem Solving and Data Analysis, and Passport to Advanced Math.

a) Heart of Algebra: This domain tests your algebraic skills, including linear equations, inequalities, systems of equations, and interpreting expressions and equations.

b) Problem Solving and Data Analysis: Here, you'll be assessed on your ability to analyze data, draw conclusions, and solve problems in various contexts, such as ratios, proportions, percentages, and data interpretation from tables, graphs, and charts.

c) Passport to Advanced Math: This domain evaluates your understanding of and ability to work with more complex mathematical concepts like quadratic equations, rational expressions, radicals, and exponents.

To prepare effectively for the PSAT, focus on reviewing the concepts within these areas and practice with official PSAT sample questions and practice tests. Familiarizing yourself with the test format, timing, and question styles will help you build confidence and improve your performance when it's time to take the actual test. Good luck with your preparation!
