SAT vs. ACT: Which one is better?

I'm trying to decide between taking the SAT and the ACT. Is one of them generally considered better than the other, or does it just come down to personal preference?

It's important to recognize that neither the SAT nor the ACT is inherently better than the other; rather, it comes down to personal preference and which test better fits your strengths and testing style. Colleges accept both tests and do not prefer one over the other, so your choice should be based on which test you feel more comfortable taking and are likely to perform better on.

The SAT and ACT have some key differences:

1. Structure and Timing:

- SAT: 2 sections (Reading & Writing and Math), with two 32-minute Reading & Writing modules and two 35-minute Math modules. You have approximately 71 seconds per question in Reading & Writing and 96 seconds per question in Math.

- ACT: 4 sections (English, Math, Reading, and Science), with a total testing time of 2 hours and 55 minutes (without the optional Writing section). You have approximately 36 seconds per question in English, 60 seconds per question in Math, 52 seconds per question in Reading, and 53 seconds per question in Science.

2. Math:

- SAT: Calculator and no-calculator sections have merged, so calculators are allowed for the entire math portion.

- ACT: Calculator is allowed for the entire math section and has a slightly more advanced focus on math topics like trigonometry.

3. Science:

- SAT: No separate science section; science-related questions are integrated into the Reading & Writing and Math sections.

- ACT: The Science section tests your ability to interpret and analyze data (charts, graphs, experimental setups) rather than your science subject knowledge.

4. Scoring:

- SAT: 400-1600

- ACT: 1-36

You should consider taking a practice test for both the SAT and the ACT to see which one feels more natural to you and on which you score better. The Bluebook™ app provides a digital practice SAT, and you can find official ACT practice tests on their website. After assessing your performance and comfort, you can decide which test to invest your time and energy in preparing for. Good luck!
