U of M Ann Arbor SAT requirements

Hey guys! I'm a high school junior interested in applying to the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. What SAT scores should I aim for to have a strong application? Also, apart from my SAT scores, what else can I do to make myself stand out in their admissions process?

For the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, while the middle 50% SAT scores of admitted students tend to fall between 1350 and 1530, it's important to remember that admissions are not solely based on test scores. That being said, achieving a score within or above this range will certainly strengthen your application. However, keep in mind that UMich is currently test-optional for the 2024-2025 application cycle due to the ongoing impact of the pandemic. This means that submitting your SAT scores is optional, and your application will be evaluated holistically, considering all aspects of your profile.

To stand out in the admissions process, focus on developing a strong academic record and maintaining a high GPA. Aim for a rigorous course load that includes AP, IB, or honors classes, if available at your school. UMich values students who consistently push themselves and excel academically.

Extracurricular involvement is another critical aspect of your application. Colleges like UMich look for well-rounded students who have demonstrated a passion for and commitment to a few key activities. Strive to take on leadership roles or initiate projects and events within these organizations. Tiers 1 and 2 extracurriculars, such as regional or national awards or recognition or significant leadership positions, will especially help you stand out.

Additionally, make sure your application essays are strong, authentic, and specific. For UMich, you'll need to write a few supplemental essays in addition to your personal statement. Use these essays to showcase your unique perspective and experiences, and highlight how you would contribute to the UMich community. Researching the university and its programs will help you tailor your essays to show you're a good fit.

Lastly, strong letters of recommendation from teachers and counselors can also help emphasize your strengths. Cultivate meaningful relationships with educators who know you well and can provide an insightful perspective on your character and accomplishments.

Focusing on these areas – strong academics, meaningful extracurricular involvement, tailored essays, and excellent letters of recommendation – will help you present a compelling application to the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. Best of luck!
