National Merit Scholar selection process

Hey guys, I was wondering how National Merit Scholars are chosen? I know it has something to do with the PSAT, but what else is involved? Are there any other requirements or factors in the selection process?

Hey there! You're right, the National Merit Scholarship Program is primarily based on your PSAT/NMSQT scores. Here's a breakdown of the selection process:

1. Preliminary selection: When you take the PSAT/NMSQT in your junior year of high school, your score is used to determine if you qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Program. To advance, you need to score at or above the qualifying score for your state. This score varies by state and year but usually falls somewhere around 210-222.

2. National Merit Semifinalists: Students who score at or above their state's qualifying score become National Merit Semifinalists. Approximately 16,000 students across the United States reach this level each year.

3. National Merit Finalists: To advance from Semifinalist to Finalist, students must fulfill additional requirements. These include submitting a detailed scholarship application, providing your high school transcript, having an outstanding academic record, writing an essay, and obtaining a recommendation from a high school official. You'll also need to perform well on the SAT to confirm your high PSAT/NMSQT performance. Students must take the SAT no later than the December prior to your high school graduation and have scores sent to NMSC.

4. National Merit Scholarships: Out of the 15,000 Finalists, about 7,500 students are awarded National Merit Scholarships. There are three types of awards: National Merit $2,500 Scholarships, corporate-sponsored scholarships, and college-sponsored scholarships. The recipients are chosen based on their abilities, skills, extracurricular achievements, and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

Keep in mind that just being a National Merit Semifinalist or Finalist can also open doors to other scholarship opportunities, as many colleges and universities offer merit scholarships specifically for National Merit honorees.

Good luck, and I hope this clears things up for you!
