Understanding SAT 1 scoring?

Hello everyone! I'm a junior gearing up for the SAT next year, and I'm a bit confused about SAT 1 scoring. Can someone please explain the scoring system and how it compares to the ACT? Thanks so much!

Hello! I'm happy to help explain the SAT scoring system and how it compares to the ACT.

The SAT has two sections: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) and Math. Each section is scored on a scale of 200 to 800, making a total score range of 400 to 1600. Questions you answer correctly will increase your score, while wrong answers will not penalize you; therefore, it's always better to guess rather than leave questions blank if you're unsure of the answer.

When it comes to comparing SAT and ACT scores, you can use a concordance table to find the equivalent scores. Keep in mind that the SAT focuses more on reasoning and critical thinking skills, whereas the ACT focuses on subject-based knowledge and fundamentals.

The ACT has four sections: English, Math, Reading, and Science. Each of these sections is scored on a scale of 1 to 36, and an overall composite score is calculated by averaging the four section scores, also on a scale of 1 to 36. Unlike the SAT, the ACT has a separate Science section, but it doesn't have a Math section where calculators aren't allowed.

While both tests are widely accepted by colleges, it's essential to determine which test is best suited for you. Some students prefer the SAT for its focus on critical thinking, while others prefer the ACT for its more straightforward approach. I recommend trying out some practice tests for both exams to see which one aligns better with your strengths and preferences. Good luck on your testing journey!
