ACT score - how does it work?

Hey there! I'm planning on taking the ACT and I'm not sure how the scoring works. Can anyone explain how the scoring system functions and how composite scores are calculated? Thanks in advance!

Hi! I'd be happy to explain how the ACT scoring system works. The ACT has four sections: English, Math, Reading, and Science. Each section is scored on a scale of 1 to 36. Here's a breakdown of how the composite scores are calculated:

1. Raw scores: Within each section, you'll receive a raw score based on the total number of questions you answer correctly. There's no penalty for wrong answers, so it's always better to take a guess if you're unsure.

2. Scaled scores: Your raw score for each section is then converted to a scaled score, which will be a number between 1 and 36. The conversion is based on equating, a statistical process to ensure that scores are consistent across different test versions.

3. Composite score: To calculate your composite score, the four scaled section scores are averaged and rounded to the nearest whole number. If the unrounded average has a fractional value of 0.5, it is rounded up to the nearest whole number. Your composite score, like the section scores, ranges from 1 to 36.

In addition to the composite score, the ACT also provides a STEM score, which is the average of your Math and Science scores, and an ELA (English Language Arts) score, which is the average of your English and Reading scores (along with the optional Writing test if you take it). These scores are also reported on a 1-36 scale.

Don't forget that you have the option to take the ACT with or without the Writing section. If you opt to take the Writing test, it is scored separately on a scale of 2 to 12 and does not affect your composite score.

To prepare for the ACT, I recommend taking practice tests and reviewing the specific content and question types for each section. This will help you become familiar with the test format and identify areas where you might need to focus your study efforts. Best of luck with your ACT preparation!
