Interpreting PSAT Results

Hey everyone! I just got my PSAT results from October and I'm trying to figure out what it means. What should I focus on to improve for the actual SAT? And is it related to the National Merit Scholarship? Thanks in advance!

Hello! Congrats on getting your PSAT results! The PSAT is a great way to practice for the SAT and see where you need to focus your study efforts. To interpret your PSAT results, start by looking at your overall score, which ranges from 320 to 1520. This score is made up of two section scores: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) and Math.

To focus your improvement for the SAT, it's important to identify your strengths and weaknesses based on your PSAT performance. Look at your EBRW and Math scores separately and figure out which areas need improvement. Dig deeper into your score report to see specific skills you struggled with or excelled at. Create a study plan addressing these areas and consider using resources like Khan Academy, which offers tailored SAT practice based on your PSAT results.

As for the National Merit Scholarship, the PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) is used to determine your eligibility. Your NMSC Selection Index, which ranges from 48 to 228, is calculated by doubling the sum of your EBRW and Math section scores on the PSAT. Each state has its own cutoff score for advancing to the semifinalist round, which varies from year to year. If your Selection Index is above or close to the typical cutoff for your state, you may have a chance at becoming a National Merit Semifinalist. Keep in mind, though, that these cutoffs fluctuate and the competition is intense.

Remember, the PSAT is just a starting point in your SAT journey. Use your results to guide your studies and take advantage of the many resources available to help you improve. Best of luck preparing for the SAT!
