Taking the SAT in October: what to expect?

Hey there, I'm a junior planning to take the SAT this October. Can anyone who's taken the SAT in the past share what I should expect? How should I divide my time for studying and what are some key topics I should focus on? Thanks a lot!

Hey! It's a great idea to start preparing for the SAT early. As of spring 2024, the SAT is fully digital, which means you'll be taking it on a tablet or computer at a testing center. The structure of the digital SAT is as follows:

- Reading and Writing: two 32-minute modules, to complete 54 questions. You have about 71 seconds per question.

- Math: two 35-minute modules, to complete 44 questions. You have 96 seconds per question, or a little over a minute and a half.

To ensure you're well-prepared, I suggest creating a study schedule at least 2-3 months in advance of your test date. Start by reviewing the basics and then practice specific math, reading, and writing skills.

For math, focus on algebra, geometry, and basic trigonometry. Make sure you understand linear equations, functions, ratios, and data interpretation. It's a good idea to familiarize yourself with both the calculator and no-calculator portions of the test.

In reading and writing, work on improving your reading comprehension and analytical skills. Questions will deal with passages from literature, history, social studies, and science, so ensure you're comfortable with different texts. Practice skimming passages to understand the main themes, analyzing the author's argument, and answering questions about specific textual details.

While studying, take full-length practice tests at regular intervals to gauge your progress; this will also help you become familiar with the digital testing format. Review your incorrect answers to understand where you went wrong and make improvements.

Additionally, consider using resources like the College Board's official SAT practice resources and Khan Academy, which offer study guides, practice tests, and personalized learning plans.

All in all, developing a consistent study routine, focusing on key areas, and regularly taking practice tests will help you face the SAT confidently! Good luck!
