Is a 1350 on the PSAT a good score?

Hey everyone! I just got my PSAT scores back and I scored a 1350. Is this considered a good score? Can it help me qualify for any scholarships?

A 1350 on the PSAT is indeed a solid score and places you in the top 10-15% of test-takers, which is something to be proud of. However, when it comes to qualifying for scholarships, the most well-known one associated with the PSAT is the National Merit Scholarship Program (NMSP). To be considered for the NMSP, you need to achieve a high Selection Index score, which is calculated by adding your three test section scores (Reading, Writing and Language, and Math) and then multiplying the sum by two. A Selection Index score of around 212 or higher (which varies by state) is typically required to qualify as a National Merit Semifinalist.

While a 1350 out of 1520 is a commendable score, it might not be high enough to qualify you as a National Merit Semifinalist, as the Selection Index cutoff threshold can be relatively high, depending on your state. However, this doesn't mean you should be discouraged! Keep in mind that the PSAT is a practice test and is not part of your college application. You can use the experience to gauge your strengths and identify areas for improvement before taking the SAT. Since the PSAT and SAT are now structurally very similar, your 1350 PSAT score can be a good indicator that you'll score well on the SAT.

Additionally, remember that colleges award academic and merit-based scholarships outside of the NMSP. When applying to colleges, research the scholarships they offer to find opportunities that match your achievements and strengths. Keep up your hard work, and use this score as motivation to study, improve, and excel on the SAT, which plays a more significant role in college admissions and scholarships.
