Reading ACT Scores

Hey there, I just got my ACT scores back and I'm a bit confused about how to read them, especially the composite score and subscores. Can someone help me understand what each section is for on the score report?

Sure! The ACT score report consists of the composite score and subscores for each of the four main sections, as well as the optional Writing test if you took it.

1. Composite Score: This is an average of your individual section scores (English, Math, Reading, and Science) rounded to the nearest whole number. The highest possible score is 36. The composite score provides a general representation of your overall performance on the ACT.

2. English: This section tests your understanding of grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure, as well as your ability to convey meaning effectively. Scores range from 1 to 36.

3. Math: This section assesses your competence in math, including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. You receive a score between 1 and 36.

4. Reading: This section evaluates your reading comprehension skills. You're provided with passages and asked questions about them, focusing on main ideas, relationships between characters, and other key details. Your score will range from 1 to 36.

5. Science: This section analyzes your ability to interpret scientific data in graphs, tables, and descriptions. You don't need in-depth science knowledge, but you do need strong data analysis and critical thinking skills. Scores range from 1 to 36.

Subscores for English, Math, and Reading are also reported on a scale of 1 to 18. They help determine your strengths and weaknesses in specific subjects within each section:

- English subscores include Usage/Mechanics and Rhetorical Skills.

- Math subscores include Pre-Algebra/Elementary Algebra, Intermediate Algebra/Coordinate Geometry, and Plane Geometry/Trigonometry.

- Reading subscores include Social Studies/Sciences and Arts/Literature.

6. Optional Writing Test: If you opted to take the Writing test, you'll receive a separate score for your essay. Your essay is graded by two readers on a scale of 1 to 6, and their combined score ranges between 2 and 12. The writing score is NOT factored into the composite score.

Understanding your ACT score report allows you to evaluate your strengths and areas for improvement, so you can plan your next steps, whether that includes retaking the test or focusing on specific subjects as you prepare your college applications. Good luck!
