Does UNC care about out-of-state SAT scores?

Hey guys, I'm an out-of-state student interested in applying to UNC. I'm just wondering if UNC considers out-of-state SAT scores differently from in-state scores? Is there a higher expectation for out-of-state applicants?

UNC does not evaluate out-of-state SAT scores differently from in-state scores. However, it's important to note that admission to UNC can be more competitive for out-of-state applicants, since the university prioritizes in-state students. As a result, out-of-state students often have stronger academic profiles, which includes higher SAT scores in some cases.

When reviewing applications, UNC looks at various factors, including test scores (if submitted), GPA, rigor of coursework, essays, extracurricular activities, and more. It would be helpful to aim for a competitive SAT score that falls within or above the middle 50% range for admitted students. For UNC, the middle 50% SAT range for the 2022 freshman class was 1300-1470.

As an out-of-state applicant, you should ensure that your overall application is strong in multiple areas, as simply having a high SAT score may not guarantee admission. Focus on maintaining a high GPA, taking rigorous courses, participating in meaningful extracurricular activities, and writing compelling essays to showcase your abilities and genuine interest in UNC.

Best of luck with your application!
