What's an SAT test?

I've heard a lot about the SAT but I'm not exactly sure what it is. Can someone please elaborate on what the SAT is and what its purpose is in the college admissions process?

The SAT is a standardized test that is primarily used by colleges and universities in the United States. It is one of the factors in the admissions process to evaluate a student's readiness for college-level work. The SAT assesses a student's skills in two main areas: Reading and Writing, and Math.

As of Spring 2024, the SAT has become fully digital and is now structured as follows:

- Reading and Writing: Two 32-minute modules, consisting of 54 questions in total. You have approximately 71 seconds per question.

- Math: Two 35-minute modules, consisting of 44 questions in total. You have 96 seconds per question, which is a little over a minute and a half.

The total duration of the digital SAT is 134 minutes, with 98 questions to complete.

Colleges use SAT scores as one of many factors considered in their holistic admission process, which takes into account a student's academic record, extracurricular activities, essays, and other factors. While a high SAT score can help bolster a student's application, it's important to note that many selective colleges and universities have adopted test-optional policies in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and recent changes to the SAT.
