How is the ACT graded?

What's up everyone! I'm taking the ACT soon and I am curious about the grading system. How is the test scored and what's considered a good score? Thanks in advance for the help!

Hello! The ACT is scored based on the number of correct answers you provide in each section, with no penalty for incorrect answers. There are four multiple-choice sections: English, Math, Reading, and Science. Each section is scored separately on a scale of 1-36, and then the four section scores are averaged to produce your composite score (also on a scale of 1-36).

The ACT test also has an optional Writing section with an essay prompt. This section is separate from the other four sections and is not included in your composite score. If you choose to take the optional Writing section, your essay will be scored on a scale of 2-12.

When it comes to determining what's considered a "good" score, it depends on your goals and the colleges you're researching. It's often helpful to look at the middle 50% scores for the colleges you're interested in; these scores represent the range where 50% of the admitted students fall. If you score within that range, your chances of being accepted may be more promising. For instance, many competitive colleges may have a middle 50% range of 30-34, while highly selective colleges tend to seek scores around 32-35.

The average composite ACT score for all test-takers is around 21. If your composite score is 21 or higher, you are at or above the national average. Keep in mind that each college has its own expectations, so it's best to research the specific requirements and average scores of each institution on your list.

Good luck on your upcoming ACT! Remember to focus on your strengths and prepare accordingly. Happy studying!
