Is a 36 ACT percentile something to be proud of?

Hey guys, I recently took the ACT and scored in the 36th percentile. I'm not sure if this is a good score or not. Could anyone shed some light on whether or not this is a solid performance and what it means for college applications?

A 36th percentile ACT score means that you scored higher than 36% of the test-takers. While this is not necessarily a low score, it is not particularly competitive for college admissions, especially at more selective institutions. To give you a better idea of what specific scores are in that range, a 36th percentile ACT score is typically around 18-19 out of 36.

For college applications, it's important to keep in mind that most colleges and universities consider applicants' test scores as just one piece of the overall admissions process. Your high school GPA, course rigor, extracurricular activities, essays, and letters of recommendation will also play a significant role in your application.

If you're targeting more selective colleges, you might want to consider retaking the ACT or taking the SAT instead. Many students find that their performance on one test is stronger than the other, so it could be worth exploring both options. You should first research the average test scores of admitted students at the colleges you're interested in to get a better sense of the score range you should aim for. There are also test-optional schools, which don't require standardized test scores as part of the application, so you may want to consider adding some of those to your list if your other qualifications are strong.

To prepare for a retake or to switch to the SAT, consider using test prep resources such as official ACT and College Board materials, online resources, or a test prep course. Don't forget to practice with timed conditions to simulate the actual test environment. Good luck, and remember that there are many factors beyond test scores that contribute to a successful college application!
