How many extracurricular activities should I participate in for Ivy League admissions?

Hi everyone! As I'm planning my high school experience, I'm wondering how many extracurricular activities I should be involved in to be competitive for Ivy League admissions. Should I focus on quantity or quality of activities? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there! It's great to see that you're being proactive about planning your high school experience. When it comes to Ivy League admissions, focusing on the quality of your extracurricular activities is more important than the quantity. Admissions officers look for dedication, passion, and impact, not number of activities.

Instead of joining a long list of clubs or organizations, try to find a few activities that truly interest you and dedicate time to developing your skills and making a meaningful impact in those areas, ideally through leadership positions. Ivy League schools appreciate students who demonstrate depth of engagement and leadership in their chosen activities.

For example, if you are passionate about music, it's better to concentrate on becoming an exceptional musician, joining a local orchestra, or volunteering to teach music lessons to underprivileged students, rather than participating in a dozen unrelated clubs.

Remember, it's your unique experiences and how you make an impact in college that will set you apart in the highly competitive admissions process of Ivy League schools, and dedicating yourself to just a couple of areas you're passionate about is the best way of showcasing those things. Best of luck!
