Decoding ACT scores – any advice?

Hi all! I just received my ACT scores but I'm not sure how to read them or what they mean. Can someone help me understand the scoring system and how to interpret my results? Thanks in advance!

Hi there! Of course, I'd be happy to help you understand the ACT scoring system.

The ACT is divided into four sections: English, Math, Reading, and Science. Each section is scored on a scale of 1 to 36, with 36 being the highest possible score. These individual section scores are called your "scaled scores." Your composite score is the average of your four scaled scores, rounded to the nearest whole number. Therefore, your composite score also ranges between 1 and 36.

To further break down your results, take a look at your sub-scores for each section. Sub-scores exist for English (Usage & Mechanics, Rhetorical Skills), Math (Preparing for Higher Math, Integrating Essential Skills), and Reading and Science (Interpretation of Data, Scientific Investigation, and Reasoning). These sub-scores can help you gauge your strengths and weaknesses, providing more insight into your performance.

Now, on to interpreting your results! Generally, colleges have a range or an average ACT score for admitted students. To evaluate how your scores match up, search for the college's middle 50% ACT range or the average ACT score of accepted students. If your composite score falls into that range, you're on the right track. However, if it's below the middle 50%, you may want to consider retaking the test or focusing on strengthening other aspects of your application.

It's important to remember that while test scores play a role in college admissions, they are just one part of a holistic review process. Colleges also consider your grades, course rigor, extracurricular activities, essays, and other factors.

I hope this helps clarify the ACT scoring system and provides you with a better understanding of your results! Good luck with your college applications!
