Good PSAT 9 scores?

Hi everyone, I'm a freshman and recently took the PSAT 9. What scores would be considered good or even great for a freshman? I'd appreciate any advice!

Hello! It's essential to remember that the PSAT 9 is designed primarily as a diagnostic tool to help you gauge your readiness for the PSAT/NMSQT and SAT later in high school. Hence, don't stress too much about getting an exceptionally high score right now. Instead, use it as a way to identify areas where you can improve.

The PSAT 9 is scored on a scale of 320 to 1520. The test is divided into two sections: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) and Math. Each section is scored on a scale of 160 to 760. Generally, scores above the 50th percentile (meaning above the national average) can be considered good. For freshmen, this would be around 410-420 for EBRW and 420-430 for Math. Great scores would be above the 75th percentile, which would be around 480-490 for EBRW and 490-500 for Math.

However, it's crucial to maintain perspective. Your focus as a freshman should be on solidifying your foundation in key subjects, such as reading comprehension, grammar, and math. High school courses and extracurriculars will help you expand your knowledge base, so you can expect to see improvement in your scores as you grow.

To continue preparing for the PSAT/NMSQT and the SAT, use resources like Khan Academy, which provides tailored practice based on your previous PSAT results, and take advantage of practice tests provided by the College Board. Keep in mind that your PSAT 9 score is a starting point, and you have ample time to build on it throughout high school. Good luck!
