Have the average ACT scores changed significantly over time?

I was discussing with my parents how ACT scores have evolved over time, and we're not sure if recent years' scores are considerably different than older ones. Does anyone have any information on this or can point me towards a source that discusses the changes in average ACT scores over time?

Yes, average ACT scores have changed over time. Between 1997 and 2020, composite scores have mostly fluctuated between 20 and 21, with small annual increases and decreases. However, it is important to note that the changes in the average scores can be influenced by several factors such as shifts in the educational landscape, the number of students participating in the test, and changes made to the test itself.

It is also worth mentioning that the ACT underwent a major change in 2015 when the writing section was revised and a new scoring rubric was introduced. This alteration did not affect other sections of the test, but it did change the writing score. Consequently, when comparing scores from before and after 2015, the writing section should be considered separately.

To get more detailed information on the changes in average ACT scores over time, you can visit the ACT Research website (research.act.org) and explore their annual reports called "The Condition of College & Career Readiness," which contain comprehensive data on yearly score averages for each section as well as composite scores. Additionally, the National Center for Education Statistics (nces.ed.gov) provides historical testing data that may help you understand the bigger picture. Remember to consider factors such as educational policies and standardized test participation when reviewing this data.
