What is an IB class?

Hey everyone! I've heard a lot about IB classes recently, but I'm not really sure what they are and what makes them different from AP classes. Does anyone have any info? Thanks in advance!

Hey there! IB (International Baccalaureate) classes are part of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), a globally recognized educational program for high school students. The IBDP is designed to be academically challenging and well-rounded, with courses in six subject areas: language and literature, language acquisition, individuals and societies, sciences, mathematics, and the arts. The curriculum is inquiry-based and encourages critical thinking, interdisciplinary learning, and a deeper understanding of each subject.

In contrast, AP (Advanced Placement) classes are individual courses developed by the College Board, and they focus on specific subject areas. While AP classes are also designed to be challenging and college-level, they don't follow the comprehensive, interdisciplinary curriculum that the IB program offers. Students can pick and choose AP classes based on their interests and academic goals.

Another key difference between the two programs is the emphasis on personal development and community service in the IBDP. IB students must complete the Core requirements, which include writing an extended essay (a 4,000-word research paper), participating in the Theory of Knowledge course (focusing on critical thinking and interdisciplinary connections), and engaging in the Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS) program (aimed at fostering personal growth, community involvement, and leadership).

Both IB and AP classes can earn you college credit, depending on your scores on the respective final exams and the policies of the colleges you're applying to.

In summary, IB classes are part of a comprehensive and internationally recognized high school educational program, while AP classes are individual college-level courses in specific subjects. The IB program places a strong focus on personal development, interdisciplinary learning, and community service, in addition to academic rigor.
