Help with AP Government FRQ Practice?

Hey guys, I'm in AP Government and Politics this year and I'm having a hard time practicing FRQs. Are there any resources you'd recommend for practice, or tips on how to approach these questions more effectively? Thanks!

Hi! It's important to have a good grasp on the format and expectations of AP Government FRQs in order to practice effectively. Here are some resources and tips to help you improve your FRQ skills:

Resources:

1. College Board's AP Classroom: You should have access to the AP Classroom through your AP Government course. It has official FRQs, including past exam questions, that you can practice with and get feedback from your teacher. Make sure to take advantage of this excellent resource.

2. Review Books: You can find review books like the Princeton Review or Barron's at your local bookstore or online. They often include practice tests and FRQ sections for you to work through.

Tips:

1. Understand the format: AP Government FRQs have four types of questions - Concept Application, SCOTUS Comparison, Argumentative Essay and Quantitative Analysis/Data-based Questions. Familiarize yourself with the requirements and expectations of each type.

2. Organize your thoughts: Before writing your response, create a quick outline. Jot down your main points, evidence, and any relevant Supreme Court cases or examples. Having a clear structure will help you write a more coherent and concise response.

3. Be specific and use evidence: Providing specific examples and evidence from course material is crucial for a well-developed response. Make sure to reference relevant Supreme Court cases, constitutional principles, or any relevant data to back up your points.

4. Consider timing: You will have 90 minutes to answer four FRQs on the AP Government exam, so make sure to practice timing yourself as you work on questions. Aim to spend no more than 22-23 minutes on each FRQ.

5. Review sample responses and rubrics: The College Board website has sample responses and scoring guidelines for past FRQs. Read through these to understand what a high-scoring response looks like and how points are awarded, so you can apply those insights to your own response.

Don't forget to regularly review the course material and stay updated with current political events to make connections in your FRQ responses. Good luck with your AP Government FRQ practice!
