What's an FRQ?

I keep hearing about FRQs in the context of AP exams, but I'm not sure what they are. Can someone please explain what an FRQ is and what it stands for?

An FRQ stands for "Free-Response Question." FRQs are a component of AP (Advanced Placement) exams, which are standardized tests administered by the College Board. These exams are typically taken at the end of AP classes in high school in order to potentially earn college credit or advanced placement in college courses.

FRQs are open-ended questions that require students to demonstrate deep understanding of the subject matter and the ability to apply their knowledge in a specific context. Unlike multiple-choice questions, which require students to select the best answer from several options, FRQs require students to construct their own responses, explaining their reasoning and providing evidence to support their conclusions.

The format and length of FRQs vary depending on the subject. For instance, in subjects such as AP Biology, AP Chemistry, or AP Physics, FRQs may involve solving complex problems or analyzing experimental data. In contrast, FRQs in subjects like AP U.S. History, AP English Language & Composition, or AP World History might ask students to write essays analyzing historical events or evaluating arguments in a piece of literature.

Generally, FRQs are weighted heavily in the overall scoring of AP exams, so it's essential for students to practice and develop strong essay-writing, problem-solving, and analytical skills in preparation for these questions. Many AP courses provide students with practice FRQs and review strategies to help them succeed on the exam.
