Struggling with ACT Reading Passage, any tips?

Hey guys! I've been practicing for the ACT and I've noticed I'm having some difficulty with the reading passages. Do any of you have tips or strategies for improving my comprehension and time management on this section?

Hello! It's quite common for students to struggle with the ACT reading section. Here are some tips and strategies to improve your comprehension and time management:

1. Skim the passage: Rather than trying to read and understand every single word in a passage, practice skimming through it quickly. This approach will help you identify the main ideas and dedicate most of your time to actually answering the questions.

2. Take a structured approach: One popular technique is to read the first and last sentence of each paragraph, as these typically contain the main idea and conclusion. After getting an overview, dive into specific paragraphs based on the question.

3. Read the questions before the passage: By doing this, you'll know what to look for while reading and which parts of the passage might have relevant information for each question.

4. Note passage structure: Some passages may have a more distinguishable structure (e.g., cause and effect, problem-solution, etc.). Identifying the structure can help you better navigate the text.

5. Annotate: As you work through the passage, underline or circle main ideas, key words, or phrases that may be useful when answering questions. Annotating will help you locate information when you need it.

6. Learn to identify question types: Questions typically fall into categories like detail, inference, main idea, tone, or vocabulary. By practicing identifying question types, you'll become more familiar with how to approach and answer each type.

7. Pace yourself: Allocate an equal amount of time to each passage (about 8-9 minutes per passage) to avoid spending too much time on one passage and losing valuable time on others. Work on building a consistent pace in your practice tests.

8. Answer line-specific questions first: Tackle questions with line references early on, as they require pinpointing specific text. This approach helps you become more familiar with the passage and makes it easier to answer broader questions later.

9. Practice, practice, practice: The more you practice, the better you'll become at using these strategies. Try using a variety of passages and difficulty levels to challenge yourself.

10. Review your mistakes: After taking practice tests or working on reading passages, spend time reviewing your mistakes and understanding why you made them. Recognizing patterns in your errors will help you avoid making the same ones in the future. If you're aiming for an especially high score on the ACT, you may want to also review the questions you got right, to ensure your overall process was sound and you didn't just accidentally arrive at the right answer.

Remember, improving your ACT reading performance takes time and practice, so be patient and persistent.
