What counts as an extracurricular?

Hey guys! I'm not exactly sure what counts as an extracurricular activity. Would part-time jobs or helping out at my parents' store be considered an extracurricular? How do colleges view these things?

Hello! An extracurricular activity is any involvement or participation, inside or outside of school, that you engage in to enrich your life, help your community, or develop new skills. Fortunately, colleges tend to appreciate a wide variety of activities as extracurriculars, not just traditional clubs or sports.

Part-time jobs, including helping out at your parents' store, definitely count as extracurriculars. In fact, jobs can sometimes showcase unique skills or experiences that may make your application stand out. For example, working in your parents' store may demonstrate your ability to work closely with family members, manage responsibilities, or cultivate customer service skills. You may also be developing valuable business or entrepreneurial skills through this experience.

Colleges value the personal growth that comes from participating in different types of activities where you show dedication, leadership, or display a passion for a particular interest. So, don't hesitate to include your part-time job as an extracurricular activity on your college applications. Just make sure to highlight the skills you've gained and the responsibilities you've held while working in the store. Good luck with your applications!
