What's the SAT scored out of?

Hey guys! So I'm planning to take the SAT soon, but I'm confused about what the highest possible score is. Can someone enlighten me on what the SAT is scored out of and what a good score would be? Thanks!

Hey there! The SAT is scored on a scale of 400 to 1600, with 1600 being the highest possible score. Your total SAT score is the sum of two section scores: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (which combines Reading and Writing & Language) and Math. Each of these two sections is scored on a scale of 200 to 800, adding up to your final composite score.

As for what constitutes a good score, it depends on the colleges you're aiming for. Generally, a score of 1200 or above is considered to be above average, which should make you competitive for many colleges and universities. However, if you're targeting top-tier and highly selective schools, you'll want to aim for 1450 or higher to be a strong candidate. It's important to keep in mind that the more competitive the school, the higher their admitted students' SAT scores tend to be.

Make sure to look up the middle 50% SAT scores for the colleges you're interested in. These figures represent the range in which 50% of the admitted students' scores fall, with 25% of students scoring below and 25% of students scoring above that range. Aiming for a score within or above the middle 50% increases your chances of being competitive at those schools. Good luck with your SAT preparation!
