Length of AP Chemistry exam

Hi, I'm taking AP Chemistry this year and I'm curious about the length of the exam. How long does it last? Any tips for managing time during the test would be appreciated too.

The AP Chemistry exam is typically 3 hours and 15 minutes long, and it consists of two main sections:

1. Multiple Choice (90 minutes): You'll have to answer 60 multiple-choice questions, which means you'll have roughly 1.5 minutes per question. These questions assess your understanding of a variety of chemistry concepts, as well as your ability to analyze data, interpret experiments, and solve problems.

2. Free Response (105 minutes): This section consists of 7 free-response questions—3 long and 4 short. You should use about 20 minutes to complete each of the long questions and about 11 minutes for each of the short questions.

To manage your time effectively during the exam:

- Use a watch to keep track of time and set an internal pace for yourself.

- Read each question carefully and fully before answering. Keep an eye out for keywords and phrases that indicate what type of answer is expected.

- For multiple-choice questions, try to eliminate incorrect answer choices before selecting the correct one. If you're unsure, make an educated guess and move on.

- For free-response questions, outline your answer before beginning to write. Outlining may take a few minutes up front, but will save you time overall by ensuring that your answer is coherent, and that you don't need to start over partway through.

- Don't spend too much time on a single question. If you find yourself stuck, move on to the next question and come back to the difficult one if you have time at the end. Remember there's no penalty for guessing!

- Practice with timed AP Chemistry practice exams beforehand so you're familiar with the pacing of the test.

Finally, if you're looking for a comprehensive overview of the AP Chemistry exam, check out this blog post from CollegeVine, which goes over the exam structure and topics covered, and even provides some sample questions for both the multiple-choice and free-response sections: https://blog.collegevine.com/ultimate-guide-to-the-chemistry-ap-exam
