Calculus AB BC

Hi guys, I'm thinking about taking Calculus next year but I'm not sure whether to go for Calculus AB or BC. Can anyone share their experiences with both and maybe help me decide which to take?

Hi! It's good that you're considering your options when it comes to Calculus. Calculus AB and Calculus BC are both AP courses, but they cover different content and vary in difficulty.

AP Calculus AB is generally considered an introduction to calculus and covers topics like limits, derivatives, and basic integrals, as well as their applications. The course is typically equivalent to one semester of college-level Calculus. Many students find this course challenging but manageable, especially if they've performed well in previous math classes like Algebra II or Precalculus.

If you want to know more about the AP Calculus AB exam specifically, which can in turn give you a more concrete sense of what the overall course covers, I'd check out this blog post from CollegeVine, which provides an overview of the exam structure and content, as well as some sample questions: https://blog.collegevine.com/ultimate-guide-to-the-ap-calculus-ab-exam

AP Calculus BC, on the other hand, is an extension of Calculus AB and covers additional topics like polar, vector, and parametric functions, advanced integration techniques, and series and sequences. This course is usually equivalent to two semesters of college Calculus. It's more fast-paced than Calculus AB, and a solid grounding in mathematical skills is necessary for success in this course.

CollegeVine's blog also contains a breakdown of the Calculus BC exam, so you can easily compare and contrast the material covered by each course: https://blog.collegevine.com/ultimate-guide-to-the-ap-calculus-bc-exam/

If you're new to calculus and want a slower pace to grasp the fundamentals, then Calculus AB might be a better choice for you. However, if you're confident in your math skills and have a strong foundation in previous math courses, taking Calculus BC can be a great way to challenge yourself, potentially earn more college credit, and demonstrate your academic prowess to college admissions officers, especially if you're thinking of pursuing a STEM major and/or applying to highly selective schools.

The decision between the two depends on your strengths and goals. You can also consult with your math teacher or school counselor for personalized advice based on your academic history and future plans. Just be prepared to dedicate time and effort into whichever course you decide to take. Good luck on your calculus journey!
