Are PSAT and SAT scores the same?

Hey everyone! Quick question, is the PSAT score the same as an SAT score? Or do they differ?

They differ, but the PSAT and SAT scores are closely related. The PSAT (Preliminary SAT) is a practice exam designed to help students prepare for the SAT. However, the PSAT is scored on a different scale than the SAT. PSAT scores range from 320 to 1520, while SAT scores range from 400 to 1600.

Though the scores are closely related, to convert your PSAT score to an SAT score, you can't simply do a 1-to-1 conversion. Since the SAT is worth more points, your corresponding SAT score will likely be higher than your PSAT score. As an example, an 1150 on the PSAT is currently approximately equal to an 1260 on the SAT.

When comparing your PSAT score to SAT scores, keep in mind that the PSAT serves as a practice test and is not used in the college admissions process. However, strong performance on the PSAT can qualify you for the National Merit Scholarship Program, which can provide financial and recognition benefits.

Ultimately, the best way to understand how your PSAT score might compare to your SAT performance is to take official SAT practice exams and compare those results. Practice tests will give you a better idea of your potential SAT score than just converting your PSAT score, as the SAT does differ slightly in terms of content, and help you focus your preparation efforts accordingly.

Finally, if you're looking for more information about the SAT, including study tips and practice problems, I'd check out CollegeVine's series of free test-prep blog posts: https://blog.collegevine.com/category/standardized-tests/sat/. These posts can help ensure that you don't just do as well as expected on the actual SAT, but actually exceed your PSAT performance.

Good luck!
